The legal duty to record working time?
The record is created when people clock in.
Start, end, breaks and duration per employee, exportable at any time.
For your team
The time clock stays on site: a tablet or smartphone with the ZEITTEL app at the counter, the reception desk, the bakehouse. One shared device for everyone, no personal phone needed.

The shared time clock, here as the web time clock in the browser on a tablet.

The owner view in the browser, with demo data.
For you
No paper slips, no spreadsheet formulas. Zeittel calculates target and actual hours for each person.
Zeittel records and checks working time. Payroll stays with your payroll office or tax adviser – using the export from Zeittel.
Optional: employee access
Employees with their own access see their times, their time account and their remaining leave themselves – in the ZEITTEL app on their own phone or in the browser. Clocking still happens at the shared time clock on site.

The legal duty
On 13 September 2022 the Federal Labour Court ruled (1 ABR 22/21): every employer must have a system that records the start and end of daily working time (section 3(2) no. 1 ArbSchG).
For mini-jobbers and sectors such as hospitality, construction, cleaning or hairdressing and cosmetics, the Minimum Wage Act (section 17 MiLoG) requires: record start, end and duration within seven calendar days and keep the records for at least two years.
That is the maximum fine if these Minimum Wage Act records are missing, wrong or late (section 21 MiLoG). Checks are carried out by customs.
With Zeittel the record is created when people clock in: start, end, breaks and duration per employee, traceable and exportable at any time.

Location
Zeittel never builds a movement profile: no routes, no background location, no location history – in any mode.
Nobody is located. The time clock stays on site; the employees’ phones play no part.
If an employee clocks in with the ZEITTEL app on their phone, the location of that moment is stored when clocking in and out – only those two moments, not during breaks, not in the background. Switched on by the business; the employee grants location access on the phone themselves.
You decide per employee. Everyone sees in the app how they clock in and grants location access themselves – or not.
On the safe side
Choosing Zeittel means clear terms: a provider in Germany, servers in Germany, contracts under German law – and everything that matters about data protection openly available to read.
As a processor, Zeittel fulfils its obligations under the GDPR; you remain responsible for the use in your business. Read more: Data processing agreement · Privacy policy
No. A tablet or smartphone you already own, with the ZEITTEL app, is the shared time clock. If the device has no access to the App Store or Google Play – a PC or a very old tablet, say – you use the web time clock in the browser; current browsers are Chrome, Edge and Firefox from version 111 and Safari from iOS/iPadOS 16.4. There is nothing to buy.
Yes. The ZEITTEL app is available for iPhone, iPad and Android: as the time clock on the shared tablet or smartphone on site, and optionally for employees on their own phone. You can find it on the App Store and Google Play. Without store access you use the web time clock in the browser.
A tablet with the ZEITTEL app in a fixed spot, such as at the counter or the reception desk, is the most practical. A retired smartphone in a holder works just as well. A PC in the office uses the web time clock in the browser. You do not have to buy anything to start.
No. Clocking happens at the shared time clock on site, with a personal PIN. Anyone who likes can also use the ZEITTEL app on their own phone, for example to see their own times.
